4 Steps to Terrazzo Floor Repair

by | May 10, 2016 | Home Improvement

Terrazzo floors are a wonderful sight to see. Nevertheless no matter how durable and long lasting these floors might be, regular use over the years can lead to scuffs and scratches that mar the surface and take the shine away. So if you want miles of shiny, polished floors, here are four basic steps for terrazzo floor repair to keep in mind:

  • Preparation is Key

Prepare the area. Remove everything–from your carpets, to any wood flooring, or even tiling you’ve installed over the years. Get all furniture out of the way. You might also want to cover any other furniture in the area that you won’t be able to remove like wall cabinets or wall mirrors. Clean up the area to remove any debris or dirt before you get started.

  • Grind Away

Figure out what kind of base your terrazzo floors have. If it’s cement-based, then you’ll need a diamond brick on your surface grinder. Turn it on and move slowly over your floors. By this time, the water should be turning muddy. Continue until you’ve covered every inch. Wipe the muddy water away to see if how much progress you’ve been able to accomplish. Your floor should be clearer. Repeat until you’re satisfied with the results.

  • Patch up the Holes

Patch up any chips or holes with thin-set mortar. Wait until it dries up completely before you smooth it over with a grinder.

  • Polish

Use polishing powder and a buffer to get the shine and polish you want. Dry the surface with a towel then protect it with a sealer, says DoItYourself.
