Increased Operating Room Safety and Efficiency with a Suture Needle Management System

by | Mar 4, 2020 | Health

Operating rooms today have two outstanding hazards: retained foreign objects and needlestick injury. A suture needle management system allows a surgeon to self-dispense suture needles and self-secure them, eliminating the passage of contaminated and unsecured needles. The system works with a needle trap to safely secure needles, which can be mounted as part of a barrier kit.

Large Kit

A large needle barrier kit consists of:

  • A lightweight, puncture-resistant barrier that mounts on the surgeon’s non-dominant forearm
  • Four large needle traps, accommodating 28 mm to 48 mm suture needles
  • Two small needle traps, accommodating 12 mm to 26 mm suture needles
  • A tool scabbard for attaching needle drivers, suture scissors and other tools to the barrier

Small Kit

A small needle barrier kit consists of:

  • A lightweight, puncture-resistant barrier that mounts on the surgeon’s non-dominant forearm
  • Six small needle traps, accommodating 12 mm to 26 mm suture needles
  • Tool scabbard for attaching needle drivers, suture scissors and other tools to the barrier

Needle traps for both kits are pre-attached to suture pack mounts with adhesive pads for attaching off-the-shelf suture packs. Once a suture pack is attached to a mount, the assembled suture pack and needle trap can be attached to or detached from the volar side of the barrier.
