While most people think that barbering just means cutting men’s hair, it can be so much more. You aren’t just taught techniques, but rather are taught the principles with those techniques, which will take you farther than learning a few modern hairstyles for men. Barber schools in the Boston area should empower you to be successful, not just while in school, but for decades to come.

Guards

Almost every barbering school in America frowns upon the use of guards on clippers or other attachments. It is considered an art form and you should understand the principles and skills for each cut. Most places believe that guards compensate for no skill, so you will learn how to do your job without the use of them. There may still be times where they are needed, such as a with a child who is nervous, but, for the most part, you will not use them in your field.

Preparing for Tests

To become a barber, you must pass your state’s written and practical exam to receive your license. You will not be allowed to cut men’s hair in Boston until you have such a license. This should be part of the curriculum because it will be necessary for you to be successful in this career.

Skills/Services Taught

Typical skills you will learn can include men’s hair cutting, grooming, scalp treatments, women’s haircutting and other skills. Cutting can include distinct styles, such as the side-and-back fade, taper, buzz, flat top, spiky, business, and military, among others. Men’s grooming will likely include facial shaving and facial hair trimming.

Scalp treatments can include face and scalp massage and shampooing while other skills can include product support, networking, client interaction and theory.

Even though most barbers will work strictly on men, you may want to broaden your career and also help women. Therefore, women’s haircutting styles can also be taught to ensure that you have a well-rounded education that will meet almost any need that arises after graduation.

Job Placement

Not all schools will offer job placement help, but if you find one, you should use those services. Once you have learned the course and passed your exams, you will have help finding a job. Outside shops are usually willing to hire you because they know the students from the school are excellent at what they do.
