3 Ways to Prepare Your Pet for Cat Boarding

by | Nov 11, 2016 | Animal hospital

Whether you are going on vacation for a week or just escaping on a weekend getaway, your pet shouldn’t have to stay home alone if there is no one else to watch them. Many pet boarding services not only provide care for dogs when their owners are away, but they board cats as well. Here are three steps you can take to prepare your cat for a short stay at a pet boarding facility.

Inspect Facilities

Before you place your cat in the hands of someone you don’t know, inspect their boarding facilities. Make sure they look and smell clean, and observe the cats currently staying there to see if they look well cared for. Also, make sure the cat boarding area is separate from the dog area. Going somewhere new will be stressful enough for your feline friend without the added trauma of being barked at while they’re there.

Visit Your Vet

If your trip is scheduled in advance, you should have your cat examined by his or her veterinarian about 30 days prior to their stay at the Animal Ark Pet Resort. Check to see if their vaccinations are up-to-date, and, if any shots need to be updated, have it done 7-10 days prior to their stay. It is especially important the feline distemper, rabies, and feline rhinotracheitis shots are up-to-date to prevent the spread of these diseases while in a cat boarding facility.

Pack Personal Items

When you drop off your pet at the cat boarding facility, pack their freshly laundered pet bed, two or three of their favorite toys, and any special food they eat. The familiar items will bring them comfort while you’re away and will help relieve any anxiety they might have. If your cat is comfortable and happy while you’re away, it will help relieve your stress as well. You can also connect them on Facebook.
