Choosing granite for your kitchen or bath

by | Jul 12, 2013 | Home Improvement

It was not too many years ago when the only place you would see granite countertops would be in the homes of the wealthy. In the last few years natural stone, including granite in Franklin TN has become considerably more affordable, resulting in an explosion, even in more modest homes. It is so popular now that even making a trip to the neighborhood DIY will result in seeing a slab of granite sitting as an inducement to buy.
There is a tendency to think of granite as being the ideal work surface. Granite in Franklin TN does do a good job of resisting stains, but not without frequent sealing as it is a porous material. Granite has the same density as vitreous tile so there is little fear that it will be marred by water or excessive heat such as one might experience setting a hot pan down.

Surface appearance:

Granite is a natural material with a variegated appearance. It can appear speckled or mottled and even granite tiles taken from the same box can be substantially different. Although the factory attempts to maintain consistency when the tiles are packed, it never hurts to check each box.

The strength ratings of granite:

Granite that is purchased for use in the kitchen or the bath is a natural stone and is subject to natural variations. As a result of this material being natural, strength ratings such as those given to manufactured tiles are not applicable. This is one of the reasons why you will find that granite tiles are somewhat thicker than ceramics; they can be as much as 3/8” thicker.

Grout choices:

When ceramic tiles are laid, the grout between them is often used as part of the overall design. Grout can and will be used which is thicker or thinner, depending on the artistic effect that is desired. This is not the case with granite. Because granite is such a beautiful material, the idea is to have the thinnest grout lines possible so that the beauty is not diminished. Normally the grout lines in granite are less than 1/8” and the color of the grout material is chosen to mimic the color of the granite as closely as possible.

Granite in Franklin TN is the perfect choice for kitchen countertops, bathroom vanities as well as fireplaces and shower enclosures. Visit website for more information.
