Exploring Alternate Broadcasting Opportunities

Considering USA has a surfeit of broadcasting outlets, it can be difficult for smaller organizations to get access to public service frequencies. That’s why some specialists have advocated for the establishment of new broadcasting services that would help these groups get on the air. Perhaps the most frequent recommendation is to expand the FM broadcast band to occupy the old VHF analog television frequencies.

Since many of these were vacated during the digital transition, it wouldn’t be difficult to turn them into additional analog FM broadcast channels. They could also be used for any number of computer-driven services. Another major proposal has been to use the 11-meter world band broadcast allocation, which is largely vacant. While these are technically international channels, radio waves work here like they do in VHF allocations so regional services could rely on them with relatively little concern over outside interference.

In either case, AD9371 software-defined radio chips could help to generate signals. Since they can create RF energy at a wide variety of frequencies, AD9371 chips have proven their worth in a wide variety of applications. Broadcasters that need to test whether or not their systems are working can use one of these to create a steady test transmission. There are also a wide variety of other applications they might eventually find their way into, including as driven elements inside of the actual broadcast circuits themselves.
