There are a number of ways to prevent any future damage to your car’s windshield. But replacement is still the best way to go. Here are a few things you’ll need to know beforehand:
Glass coverage
If your chipped, cracked, or shattered windshield has been caused by vandals, collisions with animals, fires, or even natural calamities like storms, then you might want to check the fine print of your insurance policy. You might very well be covered for these damages from your comprehensive insurance, says the DMV. Just make sure you check with your insurance provider. Some policies just cover the windows over the sides or at the back of your car, leaving the windshield out of it.
Size of the damage
Assessing the condition of your windshield or window glass is the first step to knowing whether you have a repair or replacement case to deal with. If you only have a small chip to fix, then that might be fixed by an auto glass technician. Major cracks, though, will be beyond their control. If that’s the case with you, you’ll need to make an appointment with the technician to schedule a full glass replacement for your ride.
Location of the cracks
Any damage to the side or corners of your glass have a tendency to grow and spread much too quickly. If you end up with one, try putting in masking tape to keep it from getting worse. But that’s only a temporary measure. Given the location, your auto glass technicians will recommend going for the full-on glass replacement instead.
So if you don’t want the damage to get any worse that it might break apart while you’re driving with your kids or best friends in the backseat, then you’ll want to have your glass replaced right away.
