Each state legalizing the use of medical marijuana has developed laws and requirements around obtaining a medical marijuana card. The state of Ohio offers patients the opportunity to talk to an approved medical marijuana doctor using a telemedicine visit.
The Telemedicine Visit
One of the reasons that a medical marijuana doctor can complete a telemedicine visit to make a recommendation for the patient to use medical cannabis in their treatment is the type of appointment. This is not a physical or mental health diagnostic appointment but rather a review of the patient’s history and medical records.
In some cases, a medical marijuana doctor can make a qualifying diagnosis based on the medical evidence provided by the PCP or specialist working with the patient. This diagnosis is also based on a review of the data and medical records, not through an actual physical or in-office visit.
The Experience
Patients in Ohio using the telemedicine option to obtain a medical marijuana card must have the ability to appear on camera for the session. This can include using a computer, tablet, or smartphone.
Through a secure platform, the medical marijuana doctor and the patient complete the appointment. The doctor reviews the medical information and makes a recommendation by adding the patient information into the state registry. The patient then receives an email from the state with a link. The link allows the patient to apply for the medical marijuana card and pay the required fee. Once this is complete, the patient receives a temporary MMJ card by email, with the actual card to follow by mail in about seven to ten business days.
