The Unique Challenges of Providing Mental Health First Aid in Minneapolis

Youth mental health first aid training teaches individuals about mental health and substance use issues. Professional Youth mental health first aid training is essential because it is estimated that 20 percent of Americans have substance use disorder or mental illness. Many of them are under the age of 18.

Unfortunately, because of some of the stigmas attached to substance use disorder and mental illness, people do not know where to get care or are reluctant to get care. It can be difficult for young people to understand that they are dealing with substance use or mental health challenges. That is why it is essential to have trained individuals who understand risk factors and early warning signs.

Even friends and family of individuals who are developing a mental illness may not fully understand that something is wrong with their loved one. If they do, they are unsure if they should intervene or how to do so. Sadly, in many cases, young people do not get the mental health care they need until it is too late.

Mental health first-aid shows those who receive training how to identify and understand signs of mental health and substance abuse and how to respond appropriately. Participants are taught the warning signs. They are helped to understand the impact these challenges have on the individual and their family and receive an overview of standard treatments. Mental health first-aid can lead to early detection and intervention by helping participants identify the signs and symptoms of specific illnesses, including bipolar disorder, depression, eating disorders, and anxiety.
